Job Description
The Controller will report to the Chief Financial Officer and will be responsible for the management and execution of all aspects of Accounting and Finance for a fast paced development stage bio-pharmaceutical company. This is a broad, hands-on player/coach role with a range of duties that include accounting (general ledger, payroll, accounts payable and accounts receivable), tax compliance, budgeting and forecasting, and financial reporting and compliance activities. Specific responsibilities include:
- Supervision of all accounting activities, from transaction to general ledger close and reconciliation. Ensure account reconciliations are performed in an accurate and timely manner; ensure that account discrepancies found in the reconciliation process are resolved.
- Prepare, analyze and account for clinical trial and technical operation accruals including working with personnel throughout the organization to ensure preclinical, clinical and manufacturing accruals reflect current activity and contract terms. Ensure accrual accounting is appropriately reflected in operating plans, budgets and reforecasts.
- Preparation of periodic financial reports for management and the Board, including analysis against budget and financial forecasts.
- Manage day-to-day finance activities and periodic reporting associated with the company’s pharma collaboration.
- Coordination of annual budgeting and quarterly reforecasting activities. Work closely with department heads to monitor spending against approved budget.
- Lead various IPO readiness activities and assist with the Company’s S-1. Following an IPO, direct all SOX compliance and SEC reporting activities. Prior to an IPO, prepare annual financial statements including the statement of cash flows and notes.
- Perform technical accounting research as needed to address new corporate transactions or to meet the requirements of new accounting pronouncements. Ensure proper revenue recognition and expense recording on collaboration and license agreements. Review various contracts, orders, vouchers, etc. to ensure proper accounting treatment. Direct FIN 48 valuations, prepare FAS 123r valuation assumptions and journal entries, apply EITF 07-03 to the company’s manufacturing agreements.
- Assist CFO with treasury activities including potential hedging strategies for the company’s foreign denominated contracts.
- Assist CFO with capitalization table maintenance and periodic reporting to investors.
- Support long-term strategic planning and business development initiatives.
- Develop and implement operational processes and procedures needed to accommodate organizational growth.
- Manage the external audit and tax relationships.
- Other assignments including ad hoc projects, as directed.
Skills and Qualifications
- CPA with at least four years “Big Four” experience and five years of financial accounting experience in industry. Biotech/ Pharmaceutical and public company experience strongly preferred.
- BS/BA in accounting, finance, or economics.
- Comprehensive and working knowledge of US GAAP and public company financial reporting requirements. Capable of researching and resolving technical accounting issues.
- Working knowledge of SOX requirements. First hand experience designing and maintaining internal control processes to be SOX compliant.
- Excellent analytical problem-solving skills. Strong ability to synthesize information, draw meaningful conclusions, and communicate desired messages.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to influence personnel across functions and at all levels, including the executive team.
- Able to work in small, fast paced entrepreneurial environment.
